Liberty tops Becahi in tennis

Liberty High School's singles players swept Bethlehem Catholic's in the Hurricanes' 5-2 victory over the Hawks last week.

Dan Lynn defeated Niko Franecik, 6-3, 6-0 at number one singles, Chris Snow defeated Ryan Schmidt, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at number two singles, and Brendan Cunningham defeated Luke Mesko, 6-2, 6-4 at number three singles.

At number one doubles, Liberty's Alex Burlew and Evan Burlew defeated John Corley and David Napierkowski, 8-3, and at number two doubles, Hurricanes, Milind Jagota and Chris Kapcsos defeated Marcin Boraganli and Paolo Turco, 2-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Kapcsos said, "[In the first set] they were just doing everything right. We tried a few things, but we weren't strategizing right."

The second set started relatively evenly until Jagota and Kapcsos began to pull away.

"Our coach [Leo Schnalzer] told us to mix it around instead of going right at it with them. Then we were able to close it out," said Kapcsos. "From then, we were really focused, and they kind of went away. We both felt pretty good [after we won]. We had to have played pretty well to win 6-0 [in the third set]."

Becahi won the last two matches when Peter Demyan and CJ Horn defeated Luke Corad and Julian Mark, 6-2, 6-2 at number three doubles, and Chris Landolfi and Mike Mintzer defeated Jesse Claudio and Liam McKenna, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) at number four doubles.

Regarding the Hurricane team victory over the Hawks, Kapcsos said, "We lost to Beca last year, so it felt pretty good."
