Hawks get win over LHS
Despite Liberty's two-run lead in its game against Bethlehem Catholic last Friday, it was all Hawks from the fifth inning on as Becahi defeated the Hurricanes, 7-2.
Liberty outfielder, Lauren Epsaro's double in the top of the fourth inning led to two runs scored for the Hurricanes, with additional doubles by Reina Dejesus and Alyshia Dellatore, but the Hawks responded in kind when Becahi first baseman, Kayla Horwath, tied the game with a hit to center field.
"I was ready that time," said Horwath. "I just felt like I was going to get a hit."
Horwath repeated with a single in the fifth inning, again to center field.
"The bases were loaded. I was pretty nervous. I was trying to hit a home run, but [the single] did the job. It got us the lead," she said.
The five-run fifth, as the Hawks called it, was started with a single by Bethanne Brandstetter and another by Jean Markovic.
Markovic said, "I just had a feeling today that we'd come out and play Beca softball. I wasn't too concerned [about Liberty]."
Brooke Rau added a double in the same inning.
"I was just wanting to make contact and move the base runners. It felt pretty good. It was a big thing [playing Liberty], and you want to do big things," said Rau.
Even with the Hurricanes' original 2-0 lead, Becahi pitcher, Elyse Cuttic, knew the key was to stay relaxed and hit her spots.
"I was kind of prepared. I knew [Liberty] would hit the ball. I relied on my screwball. It goes away from right hitters. And my riseball," Cuttic said.
Always a battle in the LVC, Becahi coach Rich Mazza was pleased with his Hawks.
"Our defense was fantastic. [Assistant coach] Chuck Billy was calling the pitches off balance, and Elyse puts the pitches where she wants them. Her change-up was working nicely today, and I was pleased with the bottom of our batting order," Mazza said.
