FHS looks for berths

For the past several years, the final week of the lacrosse regular season was deemed as the end game for most of Bethlehem's clubs, but this spring, there's more to the equation.

Both of Freedom's boys and girls lacrosse programs are in the playoff hunt for the first time in school history and both would love to make the spring of 2014 one to remember.

The girls side needs to win their final regular season contest against Quakertown Community today to clinch a district berth, while the boys need to win one out of their final two games this week to qualify.

Girls' head coach Charis Innarella knows that this is a historic moment for the program.

"The reason for our success is all about the kids," Innarella said. "They have developed into a team starting with great leadership with Erin Healy, Macey Walker and Lauren Fodale continuing through each and every player. They are there for each other and have each others backs. They push each other in practice and they really care."

Freedom (8-8, 4-6) knocked off Liberty 11-7 last week to help put them in this position, as Walker led the charge with four goals, followed by Fodale's three.

The boys side (5-6, 4-5) also upended Liberty last week, posting a 14-8 victory to give them a push into district potential. They knocked off Northampton Monday afternoon 16-1 to inch them closer to the postseason. With contests against Saucon Valley on Wednesday and Moravian Academy on Saturday, head coach Patrick Conroy is focused on the task at hand.

"Obviously it would be a huge deal for our program and our guys to make the playoffs," said Conroy, "but especially for our seniors whose leadership has gotten us to this point. They are the founding members of the team and for them to leave the school with that kind of legacy would be a huge accomplishment, as well as a point of pride. Win two games this week and we walk together forever, to paraphrase the late great Fred Shero."

Liberty is on the other end of the spectrum, as both of their programs will end their season this week, as the boys picked up a 13-7 win over Phillipsburg to bump their mark to 4-10 overall, while the girls were 2-11.

Bethlehem Catholic's boys program (1-13) wrapped up action on Monday losing to Moravian Academy 14-2.
