LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

'Canes keep rolling along, head into final week

Andy Pitsilos has kept one thing consistent throughout his tenure as baseball coach at Liberty, and that's been the yearly goals of the program.

As the baseball season winds down to the final week of regular season, Liberty is back in the hunt to achieve one of their goals of winning the Lehigh Valley Conference East Division.

The Hurricanes (13-5, 9-4) held a half game lead over Freedom (9-6, 7-4) heading into this week, as well as a tie-breaker over the Patriots since defeating them earlier this season.

Liberty kept their hot streak going on Monday, defeating Northampton 11-4 to win their 11th contest in 13 games.

"Our goals never change," Pitsilos said. "We always strive to win the division, win the conference and districts. We've definitely gotten better since the beginning of the year. We started 2-3 and now we've been on a roll lately. We know that we have to keep that going this week with how tight the division race is."

Liberty used a four-run fourth inning to build an 8-2 lead on Monday, as David Guariello belted in four RBI on the afternoon to lead Liberty.

Mike Horvath got the win for the 'Canes. The team travels to Stroudsburg Wednesday afternoon before capping off the regular season Thursday afternoon at Freedom. Matt Leon, who threw a no-hitter against the Patriots earlier this season, will get the nod on the mound for Liberty.

"Anytime we have Matt going for us we have a chance to win," said Pitsilos. "With the league games we have this week, we know they're big games. We've won the division every year since the LVC went with three divisions, so it's important for us to keep that going."

Freedom (9-6, 7-4) have three league games in three days this week, as they take on Bethlehem Catholic today, Liberty tomorrow and Emmaus on Friday.

The Golden Hawks (7-9, 4-6) have four games left in the league and need to win three out of four in order to qualify for districts.

As mentioned, Becahi takes on Freedom Wednesday in a huge contest for the Golden Hawks, since they play Easton (11-6, 8-5) Thursday.

They finish out the season next week against Nazareth (5-11, 2-9) on Tuesday and Dieruff (0-15, 0-10) either Monday or Wednesday.

"We need to figure out how to get a win this week," said Hawks head coach Mike Grasso. "It'll be big for us if we can steal one against Freedom or Easton."
