Zephs look for final push
With the volleyball season coming down the stretch run, Whitehall appears to be a team moving up the pack.
The Zephyrs (7-5, 6-4) are winners of four straight matches heading into last night's match with Southern Lehigh and they don't want to end there. With Allen (5-8, 1-7) on the horizon tonight as well, Whitehall hopes to extend their streak to six wins and push themselves closer to clinching a district berth.
"This week is about taking care of business," Cowitch said, who also has to take on Northampton next Monday. "Our guys are looking at it this way, three games, three must wins. It qualifies us for districts, and then it's just positioning after that."
Whitehall swept Dieruff, Wyoming Valley West and Freedom in three of their last four, needing five games to pull out a victory over Bethlehem Catholic last week in their toughest test over the past two weeks.
Cowitch credits the team finally coming together at the right time of the year.
"The win streak is attributed to our players figuring things out," he said. "We've had injuries early which we kept quiet. Guys were willing to work through it. I think the win streak has nothing to do with the schedule. This season is different from the past, where there is no guarantees. Also, teams recognize we have been strong for years, and come in and play us their best."
Now Cowitch just wants his team to reach their optimal level as they head into the final turn.
"We are not at the level where I think we can be," he said. "We are fortunate that we can push our guys, because of the work they put in the off season, with strength and conditioning training. While other teams are worried about resting guys, we are making the push forward. In the end, its all about who gets hot in the playoffs, and we definitely have a knack for that. As a team, the sense of urgency is there, which makes us dangerous this time of year."
