Township Manager Sandra Pudliner reported the decision of the Lehigh County Election Board to Hanover Council at its April 16 meeting.
"Based on all the information they had, the election board agreed to keep the polls at the Han-Le-Co Fire Station on Postal Road," she said.
At the end of 2013, council asked the election board to review the polling location with the thought that it could be located at the new municipal building.
The municipal building presented several problems with parking and the location of the booths.
"What the board said was the determining factor was safety," said Pudliner.
The fire station has good access to Postal Road and adequate parking for voters. Entering and exiting the parking lot were taken into consideration.
"Getting onto Airport Road and even Schoenersville Road from Grove Road is difficult now. Traffic gets added as the vacant airport parcels are developed and conditions will get worse," said Pudliner.
There was some discussion by council late last year that the location of the polls favored one part of the township's voting population. The recently elected council did not consider location a major factor in actual results and agreed with the election board's decision.
Unless the voter registration is new, the election board will not formally notify voters of the polling location. Effectively the location has not changed, but Pudliner will publish the decision in the township newsletter.
