Bethlehem resident is APEX aid
Maria Spirk of Bethlehem, a freshman at St. Joseph University, will spend spring break on an Appalachian Experience in McKee, Ky., sponsored by SJU's Campus Ministry. She and 22 other students will aid elderly couples with home maintenance. APEX service sites include locations in Va., W.V., Tenn. and Ky. In addition to volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, students will help at local nonprofits and enjoy meals with the community during the week.
Local woman on volunteer program
Monique Woodard of Bethlehem was one of four Wilkes University students who participated in an alternative spring break trip in Kentucky. She was a volunteer with the Christian Appalachian Project.
NCC student win ADDYs
Six students at and graduates of Northampton Community College have won this year's American Advertising Federation's ADDY advertising industry gold and silver awards in the student division. The winners are Ashley Lozada of Easton, Dolan Kutzman and Douglas Kobrin of Tatamy, Kaitlyn Kovacs of Bethlehem, Natalie Diener of Easton and Ellen O'Mally of Stroudsburg.
Local woman on R.I. spring project
Misericordia University student Alyssa Leonard of Bethlehem spent hrr spring break on a volunteer project on a mission to assist the Sisters of Mercy on a self-sustaining farm. Theservice trip was to the New Dawn Earth Center, Cumberland, R.I.
Local woman on summer staff
The Kutztown University Office of Conference Services has appointed Tiffany Brinsko of Bethlehem to their 2014 summer staff. Conference services will host approximately 60 events with more than 12,000 attendees on campus during the summer months.
Phi Kappa Phi inducts Bethlehem resident
The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, at The Pennsylvania State University, recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi Brenden Dooley of Bethlehem. The fraternity is the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.
Bethlehem resident student teaching
Lauren Thorley of Bethlehem is among the 31 University of Scranton education majors who will be student teachers during the spring semester at 24 schools which include Old Forge, Pittston Area, Abington Heights, Diocese of Scranton, Valley View, Mid Valley, Riverside, Scranton, Forest City, Dunmore, Wayne Highlands, North Pocono and Lakeland.
Bethlehem resident on headmaster's list
Ryan Poyastro-Pearson of Bethlehem, a sophomore at Worcester Academy, has been named to the school's Honor Roll and Headmaster's List for the second trimester of the 2013-2014 school year. For inclusion, a student has achieved academic excellence, challenge and personal growth.
United Way awards announced
The United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley's 2013-14 award recipients will be recognized at the annual Celebration of Caring April 30 at Zoellner Arts Center. Winners include FamilyWize Community Service Partnership, Live United Award; The Wildlands Conservancy, Leonard Pool Impact Award; Lutron Electronics Co., Inc., Campaign Chairman's Award; Community Service Committee, LVCLC, Labor Achievement Award; The Rider-Pool Foundation, The Express-Times Community Building Award and Albert Barone, C&S Wholesale Grocers,The Morning Call Silver Bowl.

L.H.S. senior to attend Lycoming
Noah Klingborg of Bethlehem plans to attend Lycoming College, Williamsport, for the fall 2014 semester. The son of Kevin and Beth Klingborg, he will be graduating from Liberty High School this spring.
NCC honors announced
Academic honors were conferred upon several local residents at Northampton Community College during an April 24 awards convocation ceremony. Local man wins DaVinci Center/GE prize
Derrick Stanley, a Bethlehem resident, earned top honors in the Da Vinci Science Center's Home of the Future Competition for his innovative concept of a fabric that can change any color, gradient, pattern, or image with the use of a stylus.
The Northampton Community College student conceived his Chameleon Skin Holographic Fabric and entered it into the Da Vinci Science Center competition as an assignment in an Interactive Product Design class. He won a GE Café French Door refrigerator with hot water dispenser and a cash prize. The competition was part of the center's GE Appliances' Home 2025 exhibition.
Bethlehem women inducted at Wilkes
Wilkes University student Ashley Matus of Bethlehem was inducted into the University's Teacher Education Program at a March 18 pinning ceremony. The Pennsylvania Department of Education's requirements for program entrance included passing the pre-service Academic Performance Assessment, maintaining at least a 3.0 grade point average, and completing 48 credit hours, including six credits each in mathematics and English. The students will continue their studies in education at the advanced level of coursework, which will culminate in student teaching.
