Catty observes Earth Day by planting trees

Catasauqua may be known for its small town and neighborly feel, but it's also notorious for its many, beautiful and thriving trees found throughout the borough.

On Saturday, community leaders and residents met at the Catasauqua Park for the borough's annual Arbor Day Celebration. Trees were planted in honor of Dennis Zeth and Jim Parry's dog, Ruby, at the Catasauqua Park. At the George Taylor House, the Revolution Church and borough Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts had trees planted in their honor. On Race Street, a tree planting honored Thomas Lynn. James Paul, first borough fire chief from 1946-51, had a tree planted in his memory at the Race Street fire training grounds. Andrew Skarbo was honored with a tree at Lenape Park.

In addition, a flower bed was dedicated at the fire training grounds in memory of the parents of Mayor Barbara Schlegel and Councilman Eugene Schlegel.

Long-standing chairman of the borough shade tree commission Robert Bastian said the commission has been active in ensuring trees are planted and preserved throughout the borough.

"We work together and we have an outstanding committee," he said.

Tim Latz, a forester with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, recognized the borough for receiving the Tree City USA award with a flag.

Latz said the award requires a community to have a Shade Tree Commission, a tree ordinance, an annual budget for new tree plantings and an annual Arbor Day Celebration.

Borough Manager Eugene Goldfeder recalled a tree that was planted on his property over 25 years ago that is still standing today.

"The trees are a big renewal," he said.

Also during the program, Bastian and former Catasauqua Councilman and volunteer firefighter Paul Zimbar were honored as Walk of Fame inductees by borough Councilman Brian Bartholomew. Both Bastian and Zimbar's names appear on bricks in front of the park amphitheater.

"This has been an outstanding day," said Bastian of the celebration.
