LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Boys fall to PHS

The path to a league title was on course for the Whitehall boys track team as the season headed into the final stretch this week

After posting wins against Easton Area and Allentown Central Catholic High Schools last week, the Zephyrs improved their record to 7-1.

A win this week against Parkland Monday would have handed the Trojans their first Lehigh Valley Conference loss and put them in a three-way tie with Nazareth for a share of the league title.

However, the Zephs were edged out by Parkland in the Monday meet and the Trojans captured the LVC title as a result. Look for more on that meet next week.

Arriving at Monday's showdown required a dual meet victory against the Red Rovers and the Vikings, defeating the former 92-57, and the latter 107-39.

The girls split their meet, vanquishing the Vikettes 102-48 and losing to the Red Rovers 104-46. Their record now stands at 5-3.

The boys meet was highlighted by a number of strong performances. J.C. Falcon won the 400 in 52.2, as well as the high jump at 6-1, and was part of the 4x800 squad which included Brian Plucinsky, Andrew Hawk and Calvin Schneck that blazed past the competition winning in 8:45.

Kyleem Harrison was first in the 110 meter hurdles at 15.5, and was second in the 100 meters at 11.3.

Andrew Frisch won the 800, crossing the line in 2:03.1, while Elliot Miller was tops in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 11-3.

The Zephs swept the shot put as Jake Kerchner paced the field with a 41-07 mark, with teammate Scott Howett in second with a 35-06 toss, while Jeffery Cordon captured third with a 35-01 heave.

Nick Nejad won the discus with a 110-01 mark and once again led the field in the javelin with a 166-04 toss.

They were also aided by solid performances by a host of other athletes, including Jarrad Mittl who finished second in the 400 at 24.0. Kurt Koehler was third in the 400 (53.9), while Schneck and Gabe Lamm finished second and third, respectively, in the mile. The duo accomplished the same feat in the 3,200 with Schneck crossing in 10:11, while Lamm finished in 10:12.

Isaiah Cary was third in the high jump at 5-9, and then followed that with second place in the long jump (19-9) and a second-place finish in the triple jump with a 42-10.50 mark.

Sebesta said it was a personal best for Cary in the triple jump. Cary has been improving all year, consistently finishing among the top three in all the jumps.

"He's just been getting better and better," said Sebesta.

The girls also had a number of athletes who put their stamp on the meet. That group was led by Emily Brand who broke the school record in the mile, a mark she previously set at the meet in Shippensburg last week. She finished in 5:28.4, placing her second in the tri-meet behind Diana Hammerstone of Easton who went 5:25.8.

Sebesta said it was a good week for the junior distance runner who set a school record in back-to-back meets.

In the sprints, Kourtney Cunningham came in second in the 100, crossing in 12.6, while Decontee Krayee was third at 12.9.

Krayee won the 200, breaking the tape in 27.2, and Arianie Pizarro finished third, clocking in at 27.4.

The 400 was won by Kourtney Cunningham in 1:02, with Angela Stella awarded second with an identical time.

Brand was third in the 800, breaking the tape in 2:31.5, while Alyssa Holland was third in the 100 hurdles at 17.2.

In the pole vault, Taylor Hamscher captured second, clearing the bar at 7-6, and then was third in the long jump with a 15-6.50 leap.

Jillian Kreglow grabbed some points in the triple jump, finishing third at 30-09.

In the throws, Madison Scarfaro was third in the discus with a 76-06 toss, while Natalie Saraceni was third in the javelin at 72-03, and

Sebesta said the girls were hampered by the absence of Ivana Jones. Still, they had a strong showing against a tough Easton squad.

He said it was another strong effort from both groups.

"Overall, I think everyone did really well," said Sebesta. "Everybody came through when they had to."
