LHS, FHS match halted
Liberty High School's tennis team scored a 5-2 victory over Northampton last week, and the Hurricanes are currently tied 3-3 in their match against Freedom, which will be continued after rain halted the number one doubles match.
Liberty senior, Brendan Cunningham, said, "We definitely didn't want to have to go that far, but it's always nice to play Freedom."
The Hurricanes won at number three singles, number two doubles, and number three doubles.
Cunningham and Dan Lynn are in the midst of a match against district champ, Andrew Sinai, and Ross Sonnenblick.
"Andrew already played two matches that day. He's so good, but we played well," said Cunningham.
Cunningham and Lynn will team up again for the District 11 Doubles Tournament, which begins Apr. 30.
In Liberty's match against Northampton, Lynn defeated Tyler Smith, 6-1, 6-1, at number one singles, Chris Snow defeated Corey Cowitch, 6-2, 6-3, at number two singles, and Cunningham defeated Tom Reinhard, 6-4-6-3, at number three singles.
"He got a lot of balls back, so I had to stay focused," Cunningham said.
In one particular game during the second set, Cunningham was ahead, 40-15, but Reinhard came back to win that game.
"I thought it was over, [that I was going to win]. It always is [a little scary] when you let it slip," said Cunningham.
In doubles matches, Liberty's Alex Burlew and Milo Foell defeated Dave Wasilko and Frank Zamadics, 8-5, at number one doubles, and Milind Jagota and Chris Kapcsos, also for Liberty, defeated Justin Burger and Andrew Szerencsits, 6-3, 6-3.
Jagota said, "We were playing better the day of the Freedom match. We weren't making as many stupid mistakes and hitting the ball out as much."
Northampton won the last two matches as Kevin Kunkle and Zach Miller defeated Jesse Claudio and Liam McKenna, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 at number three doubles, and Ross Miller and John Yeaw defeated Evan Burlew and Luke Conrad, 6-3, 7-4.
