Boys drop two

Although Liberty High School's boys track and field team suffered two losses last week, to Emmaus, 71-70, and Nazareth, 76-65, the Hurricanes did have their share of top three finishes.

Josiah Wright placed second in the 200 dash and third in the 400. Roberto Marrero took third place in the 800, missing second place by five-tenths of a second and first place by one second. Teammate, Alex Fitch, was in a similar position, having placed second in the 1600, missing first place by one second. Will Masemore took third place in the 3200.

Liberty's boys won the 4x4 relay when Wright, Marrero, Chris Ebersole, and Keauneau Bermudez combined to place first with a time of 3:35.

First place winners in throwing and jumping events were Casey Clearie in the javelin with a distance of 144-11, Darius Jones in the long jump with a distance of 20, and the triple jump with a distance of 41-7, and Isaiah Avent in the high jump with a height of 5-7.

Clearie said, "I was very surprised. I'm happy with it. Today was a good day. Usually, the weather doesn't bother me."

Clearie, a junior, is a first-year thrower for the Hurricanes.

"My sister introduced me to track. I have good coaches, and [teammate] Nicole Capuano helps me a lot, and Chase Sakitis, mostly with steps and shoulder movement, rotation and torque," he said.

First-year assistant track and field coach, Chris Durante, has also been a big help to Clearie.

"Today, I focused on pushing off harder on the back foot when I threw. It really helped," Clearie said.

Clearie's distance of 144 was a personal best, having started the season at 115.

"There is a pattern. Usually my first throw is not my best, but my second, I usually hit it good. I hit it hard every time," said Clearie.

Denzel Vereen took second place in the shot put, and Avent was third in the long jump.
