Henderson looks to take the next step
Trinity Henderson understands how she can improve her throws in the discus, javelin and shot put for the Roughies this spring.
In fact, there is a simple solution – she needs to begin a weight training program.
"After I see what I can do, I am going to make an effort to work out," said the junior, who has been among the top-three finishers consistently in the events this spring. "I have never really worked out.
"This year has been pretty exciting because I have set some personal bests."
Henderson recently had a personal record in the shot put when she recorded a throw of 37-1 that also gained her a first-place finish in a tri-meet with Notre Dame and Saucon Valley April 16. In the same meet, she also set a new personal mark in the javelin with a toss of 97-11, a throw in which she also took home top honors.
Earlier this season, Henderson set a personal record in the discus with a throw of 87-7 in a tri-meet with Notre Dame and Northwestern April 8. That effort netted her a second-place finish.
In nine of her first 10 meets this year, Henderson has recorded either a first or second place finish in one of the three events.
Last season, Henderson placed fourth at districts in the shot put with a toss of 34-10.
"It has been an exciting year," said Henderson. "Things have been great and I have been really happy so far. This is probably my best year.
"I really didn't change anything from last year. My coaches are always telling me to imagine what I could do if I worked out on a regular basis. Now, I am finally beginning to see what they mean."
Despite her training issues, Henderson acknowledges the constant support from her mother and sisters.
"They keep me going," she said. "They have always been there for me. I get a call after my meets if they are not there. No matter what I do, they have always given me encouragement."
Henderson, who previously played basketball, decided to give track a try. Her choice proved to be a prudent one as she quickly made an impression.
"In my freshman year, I really didn't know what to expect," she recalled. "I was playing basketball, but track always intrigued me. I tried it and stuck with it. It was a little hard at first, but I decided to stick with it."
Head coach Glenn Reightler knew her initial results would steadily increase.
"Trinity (Henderson) was strong in her freshman year," said Reightler. "We worked with her and she took to everything. She has become stronger in all of her events every year and really has the potential to have an outstanding year.
"She has realized what she can do with some weight training."
With her escalating success, Henderson already has been contacted by several colleges, and she has begun weighing her options, but she wants to stay focused as well.
"I have thought about it, but I really haven't made any decisions yet," said Henderson.
