Girls fall to Becahi
The Zephyr softball team has been trying to find their stride, sometimes taking one step forward, but two steps back.
In the last week, they lost to Liberty and Easton High Schools, with a win against Pocono Mountain East sandwiched in between those two games.
Their latest effort saw them fall to Bethlehem Catholic High School on Tuesday, 4-3, dropping their record to 4-6.
What head coach Alexis Berg-Townsend liked was their ability to battle back from a 2-0 deficit against the visiting Golden Hawks. She said it showed al lot of character after Monday's 8-4 loss to Easton Area High School. In that game they led 4-1 before allowing six runs in the bottom of the sixth which sealed their fate. However, by battling back to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth, the Zephs put themselves into position to win the game. Getting to that point is something they can build on moving forward as they make a push toward the district playoffs.
That comeback began with a sharp single up the middle by Karly Klein, followed by a frozen rope to centerfield by Julia Solderitch, putting runners on second and third. Klein came home on a sacrifice fly, and then Regan Bortz knocked in the tying run with a bloop base hit to shallow center.
That inning seemed to give the Zephs some momentum, but ultimately, they were undone by some errors that allowed the Hawks to recapture the lead in the sixth, and then surrendered a final run in the seventh to suffer the loss.
Still, Berg-Townsend said they played a good game. They got some clutch hits, and southpaw Kay Solderitch pitched a strong game, allowing just five hits over seven innings.
In their win against PME, they erupted for 13 runs, defeating the Cardinals 13-3. In that game, they pounded out 12 hits, scoring runs in every inning of the rule-shortened game. Leading the way at the plate was Regan Bortz who went 3-3 with a double. Additionally, Allison Beltz was 2-2 with a double.
Kay Solderitch got the win against the Cardinals, with Taylor Stephens pitching the final inning to close out their Mountain Valley Conference foes.
With three games played in the last four days, the Zephs will look to get back on the winning track this Thursday as they travel to Bethlehem to face Freedom High School.
That game will be another step toward their goal of reaching the postseason, an objective still within their reach.
"They're set and focused for making districts," said Berg-Townsend.
