Council discusses noise generated from Carmike

Hanover Council is concerned about the amount of noise coming from the Carmike Cinema complex.

Councilman Bob Heimbecker discussed the issue during the April 2 council meeting. He asked township Manager Sandra Pudliner about the opening hours of the theater.

"They [Carmike contractors] were in there early in the day for renovation work during the last week," Pudliner said.

"One of my neighbors said they saw a sign posted on the door that they would open at 9:30 a.m.," Heimbecker responded.

Noise is a concern for the residents in the Sherwood Park area. The residential community attributes most of the noise to Carmike.

When A. Duie Pyle proposed a truck repair complex near the theater, residents from the Sherwood Park expressed their concern about noise and challenged the facility.

Three of the four members of council who approved Pyle's facility are no longer on council.

Council agreed, but said they would monitor noise in the area as a condition.

"I opposed the berm when it was proposed and Carmike," said Heimbecker after the meeting.

"Are there any time restrictions?" he asked Pudliner.

According to Pudliner, the conditional agreement restricted the closing time, but not the opening hours. Pudliner said she will explore the issue further and report back to council.

Carmike's new hours of operation are 10:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Employees normally show up at the theater an hour ahead of opening.

"Maybe they are going to do something educational at that hour," said Heimbecker. "But now there are going to be windows open and people out of their houses. We need to be aware of any additional noise."

Pudliner agreed to monitor the situation and talk with local managment.
