Boys beat Hawks

The Whitehall boys baseball team keeps chugging along.

Tuesday's win against Bethlehem Catholic High School marked their fourth consecutive victory and ended a tough stretch that saw them play five games in six days.

The Zephs erupted early against the Golden Hawks, giving starting pitcher Matthew Hassick a one-run lead in the first inning. They proceeded to build on that lead with additional runs in the third, fourth and fifth en route to the 7-2 win.

Hassick was in command throughout the game, scattering five hits over six innings to get the win. The southpaw also struck out six during his stint on the hill.

Manager Shaun O'Boyle said they needed to go deep in their pitching staff with four games in four days, and Hassick responded with strong effort against the Hawks. Hassick and Tyler Kilne, along with Ginnai Sinatore and Alexander Bruneio have all had to take turns on the mound during this compacted period.

"We found out what we got," said O'Boyle. "We got a pretty deep pitching staff."

O'Boyle said that Hassick was in command simply because he was able to throw strikes. He said the lefty has a good change-up when he keeps it down, and was coming off another good outing against Freedom in which he allowed just two runs over five innings.

With Jeff Charles, Jake Meyers, Hassick, Kline, Bruneio and Sinatore ready to take the ball and sling it, O'Boyle feels they have a deep staff that can compete every time they take the field.

Freshman Bruneio has emerged as a force both on the mound and at the plate. Against the Hawks he was 3-3 with an RBI. Ryan Bonshak continued to get clutch hits, lacing two hits, including a triple. He also and knocked in two runs. Additionally, Matt Melosky had a hit, and Charles had two RBIs to help the Zephs defeat their league counterparts.

O'Boyle said that Bruneio has shown great poise as a freshman, closing out the Freedom game after they came back to tie the game, forcing them to go an extra frame. O'Boyle said he also shut the door in their 8-7 win over Easton Area High School, preserving the victory.

In that game, Bonshak, Melosky and Tyler Bridgwood each had triples, with Melosky knocking in two runs, while Bonshak knocked in one. Charles had a double and two RBIs, while Sinatore also got a two-bagger, knocking in a run.

O'Boyle said they have been getting contributions up and down the line-up, but most importantly, they're playing good defense and hitting.

The times they've stumbled this year was when they were unable to make contact. They had 22 strikeouts in those two losses, and O'Boyle knows if they get they ball in play, they have an opportunity to win.

"Next time around, we put the ball in play, I think we got a pretty good shot to beat those two teams," said O'Boyle.
