Summer job program returns to district
A summer program that began years ago has been reapproved by the Catasauqua Area School Board.
The board voted 7-0 April 7 to employ up to six temporary high school summer workers for up to six weeks during the summer of 2014. Two of the students will be employed in the transportation department and four as custodial assistants. The students will work a few hours a day and receive a stipend for their services.
Supervisor of Facilities William Gasper praised the school board for bringing the program back after a few years of inactivity.
"I think it's a good experience for them [students]," he said. "I think it's valuable. I think it's dollars spent in the right direction."
Gasper added students who participated in the program in the past have asked for recommendations for various jobs across the state and country.
Catasauqua Area School District Superintendent Robert Spengler also noted the benefits of the summer program.
"It's cost savings for us," he said. "It's been very positively received. It's great for our students."
In other business, the board approved the Facilities Plan Committee Report of the Carbon-Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21 for the 2014-15 year, the Catasauqua Area School District Special Education Plan Report as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and approved Allentown City School District, Northampton Area School District, Whitehall-Coplay School District, and eBridge Online Academy to allow Catasauqua Middle School and CHS students to attend summer school for the summer 2014 in the Allentown City School District, Northampton Area School District, Whitehall-Coplay School District, and eBridge Online Academy at a tuition rate designated by their school boards.
The board also approved the resignation of Thomas Falzone as head high school football coach, effective March 12.
Thomas Moll, director of student activities, said the district plans on interviewing candidates for the head football coach position soon.
School board member Donald Panto also publicly recognized Moll for recently receiving the Pennsylvania Region II Athletic Director of the Year award.
"He [Moll] represented our district very well," Panto said. "We just appreciate all you do for us."
