Softball collects three wins

The Catty softball team was rained out Tuesday but is coming off three wins, including beating up on Salisbury in a shortened home game from Monday afternoon, 17-5.

The Roughie girls got off to a quick start scoring four in the first and then 10 in the second for a 14-0 lead after just two innings. But Salisbury cut it to 14-5 with a five-run fourth before Catasauqua answered with three in the bottom of the fourth, then held the Falcons scoreless in the top of the fifth to end the game.

Shiloh Sziy had two hits, both of them home runs to help lead the way on offense. In all, she drove in four runs. Janae Matos also hit a home run and drove in four runs.

Hannah Edwards collected three hits while Alexis Ayache and Shannon Gallagher each picked up two hits. Ayache drove in two runs as did Shea O'Brien. Danielle Lilly, Gallagher and Olivia Scholfer each drove in one run. When all was said and done, the girls pounded out 14 hits.

Ayache picked up the win striking out three and walking two while allowing 10 hits.

On Saturday, April 12, the girls defeated Tamaqua in a home game, 5-2.

CHS again got off to a quick start with a run in the bottom of the first before the Raiders tied it 1-1 in the third. Catty scored two in the fourth to make it 3-1 before Tamaqua answered back with a run in the fifth to cut it to 3-2.

But the Roughie girls scored two in the sixth for some insurance.

Shannon Gallagher got the start and went six innings walking three and striking out seven. Alexis Ayache came on in the seventh to get the save, fanning one.

Janae Matos had the only extra base hit for Catty, a double. She also knocked in two runs as did Shea O'Brien. Danielle Lilly drove in one.

Hannah Edwards went 3-for-4 while O'Brien was 2-for-4.

Catty beat Southern Lehigh 13-9 last week.

The girls trailed 9-6 heading into the top of the seventh inning before four Spartan errors led to seven unearned runs for the Rough Riders to put them ahead.

Hannah Edwards again set the table by scoring three runs and swiping four bases in the win.

Janae Matos was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Shea O'Brien was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Shannon Gallagher was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs while Shiloh Sziy hit a solo home run in the third.

Southern Lehigh made five errors in all. Lexi Ayachi got the victory for Catty and held the Spartans scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings for the win.

BASEBALL

On Saturday, Jake Kober and Nate Pontician combine for a five-inning, no-hit, 10-0 victory over Notre Dame East Stroudsburg.

Kober went four innings and struck out five while walking two and Pontician came on in the fifth and walked one before eventually striking out the side.

Catty went in order in the first before getting on the board in the second. Dakotah Schiffer doubled and came around to score on Tyler Correll's single to make it 1-0.

CHS exploded for seven in the bottom of the third to put the game away. With one out, Nate Doria walked and moved to second on Randal Pacchioli's single. Brandon Purrone drove both runners in with a double to make it 3-0. Schiffer would walk which was followed by Kober's RBI hit which scored Purrone. Derrick Bond followed with a walk and a Correll sac fly brought in Schiffer to make it 5-0. Alex Torres walked to load the bases before Mike Shutta's double emptied the bases to make it 8-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Purrone singled and Schiffer walked and both eventually came home on Kober's single.
