PNC Bank to close

Northampton Borough Manager Gene Zarayko disclosed to council April 4 that PNC Bank will be closing its 10th and Main streets location on June 1.

"It's a sad day for the borough," Zarayko said of the bank closing. The news was a surprise to some officials and expected by others.

Zarayko said he received word of the closing from its zoning office, which was notified of the shutdown by bank officials. However the PNC main bank will continue operations and serve the public from its location at 21st and Main streets.

For decades it served as Cement National Bank, where residents and businesses did their banking. Years ago, when it became fashionable for banks to merge, smaller independent banks were gobbled up by large and out-of-town banks, the Pittsburgh based PNC bank took ownership of Cement National Bank. The clock, a fixture that was on top of the bank's main entrance, a familiar sight for the town and its people, was later removed.

While Cement National Bank may not have been the first bank to do business in town, it has a long standing history with the community.

The borough has not received any word on what may be next for the 10th and Main streets branch bank.

If the shuttered Wells Fargo Bank in Coplay is a barometer, it could be some time before another business occupies the site.

Wells Fargo in Coplay has been closed for several years. Despite signs from real estate companies offering the property for sale or rent, it remains vacant.

Northampton has two other banks on Main Street – Wells Fargo and Keystone. There is also a federal credit union office on Main Street.
