J.P. Mascaro & Sons still recycling for Hanover

Hanover resident Thomas Lerch approached Hanover Township Council at its meeting April 2 to inquire on recycling.

"I spend time sorting out all the recyclables. But I noticed lately that Mascaro just comes by and dumps everything into the same truck," he said.

Lerch asked if he should continue to set out recyclable materials separately, since it seemed as if the materials have been going to the same landfill as the other trash.

Councilman Bob Heimbecker fielded the question.

"Several residents noticed the same thing. And I noticed it myself," he said.

Heimbecker indicated that he talked to J.P. Mascaro & Sons about the matter.

Recycling is part of the contract the township has with Mascaro.

"They have a new high tech plant and it can sort out all the recyclables. I talked with them and they [Mascaro] said that it sorts everything," he said.

According to Heimbecker, when the drivers are told the trash pickup is going to the new plant, then the crew loads everything into the same truck.

"That's why sometimes they pick it up separately and sometimes they load it all together," Heimbecker said.

Lerch remained steadfast in his inquiry.

"I don't understand how they can do that. How can they separate the glass and the plastic," he asked.

Heimbecker said he does not know the technology behind the new plant, but relayed the information he was given from Mascaro.

In other business, council granted approval for a business on North Maxwell Street to increase the capacity of its liquid propane gas tank. Present rules limit propane storage tanks to 1,000 gallons. The company, which acts as a transfer station, requested more capacity.

Township Manager Sandra Pudliner reported the township applied for a Community Development Block Grant to improve sewers in Chestnut Grove.
