Charotin Hose Company Fire Calls

North Catasauauqua's Charotin Hose Company responded to the following calls recently.

Cardiac arrest

Feb. 16, 12:49 a.m.

Charotin personnel responded to a call with Northampton Regional EMS at the corner of Fifth and Grove streets for a cardiac arrest. The caller reported a male was not breathing and was unresponsive.

Automatic fire alarm

Feb. 19, 1:41 p.m.

North Catasauqua and Catasauqua firefighters were dispatched to the Silver Manor residential facility at 2 Front St., Catasauqua, for an automatic alarm. The North Catasauqua engine was recalled while enroute to the scene. The alarm had been triggered by workmen in the building.

Odor investigation

Feb. 20, 8:34 a.m.

North Catasauqua and Catasauqua firefighters were dispatched to 748 Front St., Catasauqua, for an odor investigation. The caller reported smelling natural gas both inside and outside her dwelling.

Structure fire

Feb. 21, 11:15 p.m.

Charotin firefighters responded along with the Northampton and Allen Township fire departments for a structure fire at Siegfried Elementary School, 1677 Lincoln Ave., Northampton. The caller stated there were flames shooting out of a portable heater.

When firefighters arrived, they searched the affected area of the building. A strong odor of electrical burning was present in the electrical utility room. A ceiling-mounted electric heater was identified as the cause and power was isolated to the unit. Fans were set up to ventilate the smoke and odor from the school.

Control of the school was returned to district maintenance personnel and firefighters cleared the scene.

Dwelling fire

Feb. 25, 7:33 p.m.

North Catasauqua firefighters were dispatched with the Catasauqua Fire Department for a dwelling fire at 549 Bethlehem Road, Catasauqua. First arriving, Catasauqua police and fire officers confirmed a working fire and requested a RIT assignment from Greenawalds Fire Department and an ambulance to the scene.

North Catasauqua arrived on the scene as the third due engine and laid in nearly 1000 feet of 5-inch supply hose from a secondary hydrant. Charotin personnel were ordered to manpower staging while members of the Catasauqua Fire Department fought the fire. With conditions worsening, firefighters were pulled from the interior of the structure and the North Catasauqua engine crew was ordered to supply the Catasauqua ladder apparatus truck for an exterior attack.

Once the bulk of the fire was darkened down, members assisted with overhaul as directed. Firefighters from the department were released approximately two hours after arriving on the scene and spent nearly another hour repacking hose, cleaning equipment and ensuring the apparatus was ready for the next emergency.

Automobile fire

March 10, 6:31 a.m.

Firefighters from the NCFD were dispatched to an automobile fire at 1144 Fourth St. When they arrived, the fire was already out. It is believed that the fire burned itself out.

Move-up assignment

March 30, 5:36 p.m.

North Catasauqua firefighters were dispatched on a move-up assignment to the Fullerton station of Whitehall Township Fire Department. Whitehall Fire Dept was busy at a second alarm structure fire at the Perkin's Restaurant on MacArthur Road with various mutual aid companies.

Washer malfunction

March 29, 2:36 p.m.

NCFD firefighters responded with the Catasauqua Fire Department for a reported apartment building fire at 118 Bridge St., Catasauqua. The caller had reported a dryer fire on the fourth floor.

Firefighters arrived and found an overheated belt in an overloaded washing machine. There was not fire. Firefighters set up mulitple fans to ventilate the light smoke condition. the malfunctioning machine was turned over to the building maintenance personnel and firefighters cleared the scene.
