After a tough loss WHS bounces back

It didn't take long for the Whitehall boys baseball team to bounce back after suffering their first defeat of the season.

After losing to Emmaus on a strong pitching performance by Josh LeMaster, the Zephs quickly shrugged off the loss defeating Pocono Mountain West 8-0 last Saturday.

It's always good to have a short memory and the Zephs were able to put that game in the past, collecting 14 hits en route to the win. They're now 5-1 on the season.

Head coach Shaun O'Boyle said the win over the Panthers helped erase that bad taste left after their tough loss.

"It was big to come back and win," said O'Boyle. "We needed that after that loss."

He said it was good to start the week with a win, and with the postponement of Tuesday's game, and most likely Wednesday's game, it becomes something they can build upon as games start to pile up.

Additionally, O'Boyle said that having a short memory is something he preaches to the players on a consistent basis.

"This is a sport with a lot of failure," said O'Boyle. "If you're going to let those things get to you, you're going to have a hard time and it's not going to be fun."

That short memory was certainly needed after they struck out 13 times against LeMaster.

"You just have to come out the next day and forget about it," he said.

Jacob Meyers helped the Zephs forget about the Green Hornets, whacking two big hits and knocking in three to help them get back into the win column.

Meyers, who also started the game, struck out four in his three innings of work.

O'Boyle said that Meyers was clutch at the plate, taking advantage of runners in scoring position when he delivered his hits.

Also delivering at the plate was Ryan Bonshak who went 2-2 with a double and an RBI. Matt Melosky continued his torrid hitting, lacing three hits, including a double.

Matthew Hassick who relieved Meyers in the fourth got the win. He also came through at the dish, knocking in two runs. Robert Yost finished the game for the Zephs, pitching the seventh.

Having that resiliency to bounce back is also a byproduct of a strong veteran team, and the Zephs have a strong corps of senior leadership that will help them overcome tough losses.

As for now, they'll prepare for a slew of games, starting with Parkland High School on Thursday.
