Resident asks questions
Donald Noll, a resident of Allen Township, urged Northampton Borough Council to take an active position on FedEx's plans to build a mega transportation hub.
Noll argued at the April 3 council meeting the project will adversely affect the borough. Noll is among a large group of residents concerned about the impact of increased truck traffic, road congestion and other issues.
"We have seen nothing as we speak," Council President John Yurish said in regard to FedEx's plans.
Yurish and Borough Manager Gene Zarayko indicated Allen Township has not mailed any correspondence or called the borough.
Yurish said the borough is receiving information on the hub by "reading the papers."
"They [Allen Township] never came to us," Zarayko said.
Township supervisors have been silent regarding the FedEx plans, since the plans are before the township planning commission. After it completes its hearings and review of the plans, it will submit its findings and recommendations to the board of supervisors, presumably by June. The supervisors will then vote on the issue.
Noll said the project will be located close to the borough's boundary on Willowbrook Road.
Yurish said the borough has not received feedback from Allen Township regarding the plans.
"Most of what you are saying we have heard," Zarayko said.
Councilman Ed Pany questioned why discussions have been silent regarding Allen Township, which he said allowed "a gigantic building" to be erected outside of Bath that creates considerable traffic.
Zarayko, Yurish and others said published reports indicate FedEx contends it will manage the traffic. However, opponents argue increase vehicle movement will choke traffic on Route 22 and many other roads, despite widening.
Zarayko said a letter will be sent to Allen Township requesting that the borough be kept informed on the plans.
