Parkland volleyball sweeps Whitehall

Just two days after getting a scare from Northampton, losing the first game of the match and having to fight for every point of the next three games, the Parkland boys volleyball team had to face off with another tough North Division opponent in Whitehall last Thursday night at Parkland high school.

This time, however, in front of their home crowd, the Trojans played with a lot of energy and passion and took down the Zephyrs in three straight games 25-18, 28-26, and 25-21 to remain unbeaten on the regular season at 4-0 and perfect in the Lehigh Valley Conference at 3-0.

"We really worked hard at practice yesterday and looked at the things that we needed to fix [from the Northampton match]," said senior libero Christopher Schweikert. "It was just the little things, like working as a team, hitting the ball better, and passing to each other. We just performed a lot better today."

Parkland was able to jump on Whitehall early and take game one after dominating the front net. But in game two, it was more of a struggle, as the Trojans needed to hold on after the Zephyrs forced extra play.

"Whitehall brought a lot of energy so we needed to match that," said Schweikert. "We were able to get there when the time was right and finish out that game with some key plays by the team."

The two teams followed up game two with another close game in the third. But once again Parkland got the better of Whitehall and scored on key possessions when it mattered the most.

The win, coupled with a 3-0 victory over previously unbeaten Easton this past Tuesday night, keeps the Trojans steaming forward unblemished and with a lot of confidence moving forward.

"Now that it is getting more toward midseason, our skill sets are showing and we have to keep that going," said Schweikert. "Playing as a team and communicating together is key. If we do that we can have a good second half of the season and can make a run in the playoffs."

Tyler Phifer finished the match with 10 kills and 3 blocks, and Mitchell Fox added 9 kills and 2 blocks for the Trojans.
