New garage site is approved by zoners

Several months ago, Jason Bowersox came before Catasauqua's Zoning Hearing Board asking for approval to establish an auto service garage at 16 West Race St. Bowersox's garage was housed on the level below a strip of service stores that face Race Street.

The board approved the measure.

The zoning in this area of Race Street permits service garages as a special exception, which requires appearance before the zoning hearing board.

Bowersox returned to the board on March 18 to ask for permission to carry on his business in the same area, but in a different building.

"The hair salon above the shop complained of odors," he explained. "We couldn't determine if they were coming from the shop, but they were not there before I moved in."

Bowersox's new location will be in a pre-engineered building across the parking lot from his existing location. His hours of operation will remain the same. The vacant metal building is adjacent to the Catty Scrap Yard.

Acting zoning Chairman Dan Scheirer noted the building would be much larger than his existing space.

"It gives me much more room to expand, and I have a service entrance and a loading dock," Bowersox said.

No other problems are on record about his service garage. After a short discussion, the board unanimously gave its approval for the move.

In other action, an appeal regarding a proposed online car dealership at 18 Bridge St. was withdrawn. According to Borough Manager Eugene Goldfeder, there was opposition to the request.

"The use would require an exception to the zoning rules," he said after the meeting. "In my discussion I informed the applicant that neighbors and council were opposed to the request." The applicant withdrew his request before the zoning board convened.
