New businesses coming to the borough

Four new business will grace Northampton Borough in the future.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko reported the news to borough council recently.

Zarayko said the four businesses include T&J Nails, opening soon at Cherryville Square Center and a New Jersey based diving academy. The academy has rented two vacant store spaces at Cherryville Square Center to operate its school and offices. Scuba diving training will take place at a former cement quarry owned by the Lafarge Cement Company, off Route 329.

Also opening is a Thai restaurant in the 900 block of Main Street, formerly Gio's Downtown Cafe. Additionally, Edelweis Haus, operated by new owners, opened recently. Tanya Hamlin and business partner John Karpyn are the owners. The business is located on the lower end of Main Street. The tavern, bar, kitchen and dance floor are operating full-time for the first time in five years. However, instead of polkas and button box accordions, comedy, bands and games for entertainment will be featured. German and Austrian cuisine could be on the menu as the new owners settle in.

"No major changes are planned for the Edelweis at this time," Zarayko said.

The borough hopes new tenants will fill two major empty commercial slots – the closed Northampton Auto Parts, on Main Street, and Paulos, an Italian restaurant, at the Cherryville Square Center.
