Henderson leads CL in shot put
As the Colonial League track and field season progresses, although slowly, Trinity Henderson continues to cement herself as the top athlete in the shot put early on.
Entering Tuesday's dual meet against Northwestern, Henderson led all Colonial League girl participants in the shot put at 34-6 1/2. On Tuesday, she increased that by nearly six inches, finishing first in the event with 35-1.
She was the lone Rough Rider on the girls' side to capture first place in an event in the team's 136-14 defeat to the Tigers.
"It's really good," Henderson said. "I'm proud of myself [for getting] 35. I think I can do better and train a little bit harder. We'll see how it goes."
She placed fourth in shot put during last year's district meet. She has aspirations of reaching that level once again, with also a trip to the PIAA level on the agenda as well.
"Probably like 36 or 37, somewhere around there," Henderson said of her goals for the shot put this season.
Henderson also participated in the discus and improved her previous season-best mark from 82-08 to 87-07 on Tuesday. She came in second place behind Northwestern's Trista Cunningham at 106-08.
"I think I'm improving because in discus I got better," Henderson said. "In shot put, I'm trying more this year at least. In javelin, I could throw a little bit better, [but] I'm improving I would say."
Quinn Bachman came in third in the long jump (14-02 1/2) and triple jump (28-10) for the Rough Riders, Dakoha Zelinsky placed third in the discus at 75-03, and Gabrielle Bachman took second in the javelin at 84-04.
Despite a tough 117-33 loss on the boys' side, a number of Rough Riders continued to put up impressive numbers through two league meets.
Ty Kern entered the meet with the second-best mark in the league in the pole vault at 11-6. He improved on that mark and earned first place against Northwestern with an even 12-0.
The weather postponements have had an impact across all sports in the Lehigh Valley, and it's no different for the Colonial League track and field teams. Tuesday's meet was both team's second of the season, and practice situations have been hindered thus far.
"We haven't had much of a chance to actually train outside," head coach Glenn Reightler said. "That's the biggest thing. We might have been outside four or five times all year, so we're out of shape. Hopefully by the end of the regular season, they'll be getting back in shape so the kids are going to perform where they can be for the league meet and district meet."
Richard Kouser earned the top spot in both the long jump (19-04) and triple jump (40-0) events, and Isaiah Berry scored top-three finishes in the shot put (38-04) and discus (111-04). Paryss Marshall - who had the third-fastest Colonial League time in the 110 m hurdles going into Tuesday - finished second with a time of 16.0, three tenths of a second faster than his previous time.
"He might have ran his fastest time in the hurdles today," Reightler said. "He ran well again, too."
The Rough Riders will participate in a tri-meet on Thursday with Salisbury and Bangor. Meet time is set for 4 p.m. at Bangor.
