LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Baseball team about to get busy

The spring sports period has taken a cue from its seasonal neighbor, winter, in deciding to impose bad weather that has forced games to be canceled.

That's been the case with Whitehall baseball this season, with Tuesday's game against Easton Area High School postponed, their field a muddy casualty, Manager Shaun O'Boyle said they've had four rainouts so far this season, and that means next week's schedule will have a game almost every other day.

They haven't played since Saturday when they defeated Bangor 11-1. The bulk of the damage was done in the first inning as the Zephs scored six runs off Slater starter Alex Ernst.

Ryan Bonshak got things rolling with a single. Gianni Sinatore followed with a single as did Tyler Bridgwood. After Jeff Charles was retired on a fly, Jacob Meyers doubled, scoring two. Tyler Cyriax kept the hit parade going with a single, scoring a run. The Zephs then got a walk and a fielder's choice, setting up an RBI single by Adam Miller. Bonshak then followed with a single, his second hit of the inning to plate the final run.

With six runs to work with, starting pitcher Meyers was able to relax once he took the mound. Meyers first two outings were both a bit rocky, but his line against the Slaters saw the junior hurler return to form. O'Boyle said he only gave up one hit in four innings of work (the game only went five due to the 10-run rule). During that span, he allowed just one hit and struck out five. He also allowed just one runner to reach base. O'Boyle said he was efficient as well, throwing approximately 35 pitches during his stint on the hill.

O'Boyle said that it was an encouraging sign given his earlier outings.

"It was actually good to see, because his other starts, it was uncharacteristic of him," said O'Boyle. "We got him a lot of rest and it paid off."

Up until this point, the Zephs have used just Charles and Meyers on the mound to start games. That's all going to change next week as make-up games get crammed into their schedule.

He said that's when he'll need the rest of his staff to bring the heat.

Matthew Hassick finished the game, allowing three hits and one run.

A number of Zephs had a good day at the plate, including Sinatore who went 2-3 with two RBIs. Meyers also knocked in two runs to help his cause.

The hottest bat belongs to Matt Melosky. The first baseman hit another home run, this time a solo shot in the third. It's his second consecutive game with a dinger, and O'Boyle said that the senior leads the team in batting with an average of .670.

"He's actually doing very well hitting eighth," said O'Boyle. "He's a fastball hitter and we put him in there to see fast balls, and he's hitting them."

While Melosky's bat has been the loudest of late, the whole team has been swinging the stick well since the opener. They have scored 41 runs in four games, a testament to how well they're hitting, especially with runners in scoring position. It's been a productive beginning at the plate, up and down the whole line-up, and O'Boyle said they've been solid since the start.

"Top to bottom, everybody's been hitting," said O'Boyle.

As for the week coming up, O'Boyle hopes their ability to score runs in bunches carries over, giving them a boost as they get into the heart of their Lehigh Valley Conference schedule.

"If we can keep scoring runs like that, we'll be okay," said O'Boyle.
