Spotlight On: 'Aladdin' rides into Miller Symphony Hall
Legendary storyteller Scheherazade comes to life at 2 p.m. April 13, Miller Symphony Hall, 23 N. Sixth St., Allentown, in Enchantment Theatre's production of "Aladdin and Other Enchanting Tales."
Landis Smith, Artistic Director and head of production for the show, explains that the idea for "Aladdin and other Enchanting Tales" came after the Enchantment Theatre, based in Philadelphia, toured the country with an orchestral performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade."
"Scheherazade was a storyteller who saved the Arabian King by inspiring him with her tales," says Smith. "The tour of 'Scheherazade' was very successful. We visited symphony orchestras throughout the United States and Canada.
"We asked our composer, Charles Gilbert, to adapt the music of 'Scheherazade' for a play with a smaller ensemble. Charlie then changed some of the composition a bit and wrote original music to tie the stories together."
Smith wants people to know that "Aladdin and Other Enchanting Tales" is not just for children. "This isn't just for kids," he says. "The 'Arabian Nights' tales were mentioned in Shakespeare. They are important cultural tales around the world.
"Most people are not aware that the original stories took place in all different countries, in places like China and Africa. The stories really speak to humanity, to human adventures and human trials. Everyone likes stories of heroes. We all like to see the hero struggle and then succeed against all odds."
"Aladdin and Other Enchanting Tales" has a special tie to the Lehigh Valley as its cast is made up entirely of Muhlenberg College graduates. Enchantment Theatre regularly visits Muhlenberg's Allentown campus in the spring to audition for its productions.
"We have a special relationship with Muhlenberg," says Smith. "The students there learn mime and magic so they fit well with us. In 'Aladdin and Other Enchanting Tales,' there is a great deal of magic. In one part, a character is levitated on swords. It's really spectacular. "
It's important to Smith that the audience delights in the magic of the production. "This show is something really amazing. It's one of the most magical shows we have ever produced. The scenery is projected behind the actors for every scene. You see castles. You see deserts. There is something for everyone and for all ages."
