Off to a rough start
Neiad Ammary knew this was going to be a bumpy road this season with an entirely new roster on the volleyball court, but Ammary isn't in full-blown panic mode just yet.
Liberty (1-4) has lost four straight since a season opening win over Nazareth, including three straight losses to divisional opponents Bethlehem Catholic, Easton and Freedom.
With Whitehall, Parkland and Delaware Valley on the docket this week, Ammary and company could be on the verge to lose grip on the season this early, but the head coach isn't feeling the pressure.
"I don't know if we're in a rebuilding phase," Ammary said, "but we do have a lot of young guys without any real varsity experience. They're just not consistent at this point. It takes awhile to process the speed of the game and I think we're working through that right now."
With senior Steven Hughes, middle blocker, returning as the lone player on the team with extensive varsity experience, the growing pains may seem to last a bit longer for the Hurricanes, but he isn't losing sight of the other important factors he takes into consideration when it comes to evaluating a full season.
"I'm not frustrated with how we've been performing," said Ammary. "I actually love coaching a young team. I see the potential they have, especially this group of 10th graders. I'm optimistic about it and we're going to take some lumps, but we'll get better.
"We don't just focus on wins and losses, but also how we develop these young men into leaders and mold their overall character."
Bethlehem Catholic (1-3) has also seen its shares of early season struggles, as their only win was against Liberty in five games. The Hawks face Allen and Northampton this week.
Freedom has been the only team in Bethlehem holding down the court, as the Patriots (2-2) have been on more solid ground. Both of their wins have come against Bethlehem counterparts, as Easton (5-0, 3-0) has gained a stranglehold on the division, sweeping the Bethlehem schools so far.
The Pates should get a bump this week with Southern Lehigh and Allen on the schedule.
