Bethlehem Catholic's softball team is off to a 4-1 start at the beginning of the 2014 season.
Last week, the Hawks defeated Freedom, 3-1, and Easton, 8-5.
Catcher Jean Markovic said, "People are not counting us in. This year, we're the underdog, so there's less pressure. It's definitely easy for the younger girls because they don't think about it as much."
Markovic, Julia Madison, and Emily Brandstetter, all senior captains, are seeing to it that the team stays loose and has fun, also alleviating unnecessary pressure.
"We're a real young team compared to what we've been. We advise the younger girls, keep morale up. The whole team gets along really well," said Markovic.
In the Hawks victory over the Patriots, Madison was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore pitcher Elyse Cuttic was 2-for-3 with an RBI and had five strikeouts.
In the Hawks victory over the Red Rovers, Madison had three hits and scored three runs, while Brandstetter had two hits. Cuttic had an RBI and six strikeouts.
"It's kind of cool [catching for Elyse] because we're both lefties. It's different, not catching for Joelle [Morey, who graduated] because she was more experienced. Now, I have more experience. It's fun being the older one," Markovic said.
