Zephyr softball falls to Nazareth
It's been a bit of a bumpy ride for the Whitehall softball team as their foray into league action has come with some stumbles for a young squad that's looking to gain a foothold.
After winning their opener, the Zephs dropped their next two games, losing to Northampton 10-7 last week, followed by a Monday defeat to Nazareth, 7-2.
Head coach Berg-Townsend said that they've been looking to incorporate all aspects of their game: hitting, pitching and defense over the course of seven innings, something they didn't do against the Blue Eagles.
"From the start of the game, we didn't seem to put everything together," said Berg-Townsend. "We didn't put pitching together, we didn't put defense together, we didn't put offense together all at the same time."
She said it's a work in progress and they'll look to get better each time they take the field.
"Our next goal that we have for the team is working on baby steps, getting that first batter out of the game and not putting her on base, either through a walk or hit," said Berg-Townsend. "Work on getting her out, and getting ahead that way on the defensive side of things."
Berg-Townsend is encouraged by the experience they've gained in the first few games. They've shown some growth and that will bode well as they get into the meat of their schedule.
"They're beginning to start to learn one another and work with one another to see what one another can and cannot do," said Berg-Townsend. "We're starting to play more like a team right now."
She believes that familiarity with one another will breed a more competitive team which will lead to success.
In Monday's game, the Zephs pounded out more hits (8) than the Blue Eagles (6), but Nazareth was able to get the key hit while also taking advantage of Whitehall's two errors.
The game began with Julia Solderitch on the mound, followed by Taylor Stephens and Ashlee Brosky. Offensively, the Zephs got a big day from Kay Solderitch who went 2-3.
In last week's loss to the Konkrete Kids, Gabrielle Molotoris went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
