Volleyball earns comeback win
Playing with a lot of energy and intensity, the way a lot of schools play against Parkland, the Northampton boys volleyball team took the first game of a match between the North division rivals Tuesday at Northampton High School.
It gave the Konkrete Kids momentum, putting the Trojans in a hole that they don't find themselves in very often. But the momentum did not last long, and Parkland regained its composure to win the next three games and the match, 3-1, by scores of 24-26, 25-21, 25-21, 25-17.
The win keeps Trojans undefeated in the Lehigh Valley Conference at 2-0.
"The LVC North is the toughest division in the conference," said Parkland head coach Scott Trumbauer.
"We don't have an easy start to the regular season. It's a great thing to be undefeated, but it doesn't mean anything when it comes down to it."
Starting off slow, Parkland fell behind in game one, and made some uncharacteristic mistakes to help Northampton secure the opening game win.
"We made some little adjustments and took the match more seriously," said Trumbauer. "For some reason, we struggle in this gym. We started slow, but luckily we finished strong. It was a nice wake up call for us."
Just like any good team, the Trojans bounced back. Through the course of the next three games, they rarely trailed, the only times being at 17-16 and 19-17 in game three.
Parkland did its best to fend off any Konkrete Kids rallies, and to ease any pain from that opening game loss.
"We tend to follow our emotions," said Trumbauer. "We made one mistake and it would snowball into four or five, and that's a big swing in volleyball. If we make one mistake, fine, but don't let it happen again."
Kyle Stout had 10 kills and Andrew Hillman added eight kills, three aces and 23 assists. Loren Skinker also dished out 24 assists on the night while Tyler Phifer added 10 kills and three blocks.
The Trojans will now host another north division team in Whitehall on Thursday night at home.
