Via games take place

For a number of players across the Lehigh Valley, Saturday was the culminating day of the 39th Annual Via All-Star Basketball Classic that they'll remember for quite some time.

For Whitehall senior Aaron Keglovits, he was able to take part in those Via events over the past couple of weeks, ending with Saturday's hoops games.

Keglovits scored four points in the Lehigh Valley West's 97-96 win over the Colonial League on Via's "Super Saturday" at Northampton Area Community College.

"It's great," Keglovits said. "They're all great athletes and they're all great players. You have a little rivalry during the year, but it's nice to just be with them."

Salisbury's Justin Aungst hit a three-pointer in the final 30 seconds to bring the Colonial League to within a point, but LV West was able to hang on in the final seconds to walk away with the victory.

While LV West held a 56-47 lead at halftime-and a 61-51 advantage early in the second half-the Colonial League never went away.

Notre Dame-Green Pond's Vincent Eze threw down a dunk late in the game that put the Colonial League up 84-83. But LV West scored 14 of the next 20 to regain control, 97-90. The Colonial League finished the game on a 6-0 run of their own but ran out of time.

"Just hanging out with all the guys you play against the whole year, it's fun to be around them," Keglovits said.

LV West's Joey Nicolini (Emmaus) and Colonial League's Tanner Reed (Notre Dame-Green Pond) each scored 20 points.

The Colonial League girls, behind 15 points from Saucon Valley's Bridgette Gilmore, outlasted the Lehigh Valley West by a final of 64-62.

In a game that involved plenty of runs, the Colonial League turned a one-point deficit into a 61-50 lead after going on a 14-2 spurt. LV West, however, ended the game on a 12-3 run. Allen's Tanisha Jones netted a three-pointer with roughly 1:18 to go that made it a one-point game. But a final shot from LV West hit off the front of the rim.

The Via All-Star Banquet was held on March 26 at the Sands Bethlehem Event Center. All of the players were recognized at the banquet, while the boys and girls Via All-Star Teams, Via Players of the Year and scholar-athlete winners were named. Former NBA player James Worthy was the keynote speaker at the ceremony.

The event kicked off with the Via All-Star Basketball Clinics on March 23. Players from all of the Via teams helped a number of kids with special needs with the game of basketball at Northampton area Community College.

"It was great," Keglovits said of the Via events. "The banquet was nice; the way they set it up, everything was good. The clinic they had the other night, I was in that, [and] that was amazing."

The third game on "Super Saturday" featured an 85-83 win for the Lehigh Valley East girls over the Mountain Valley girls. In the finale, the Mountain Valley boys outlasted the Lehigh Valley East boys by a 125-122 final.
