Trojans open with four wins
It's hard to imagine a better start to the season for the Parkland baseball team.
Following their season-opening 11-2 nonconference win over North Penn, the Trojans (4-0 overall; 2-0 in LVC) used a total dominating effort to shut out Nazareth, 9-0, in their first LVC game of the season.
Gabe Moser struck out nine Nazareth batters over five innings of two-hit baseball, while seven Trojans scored runs in the victory.
"We played real well," Moser said after the Nazareth victory. "All around it was well-played. The bats were alive and everything was just good."
"It was a way to make a statement to start the season off," said Zach Miller, who homered in the fifth inning. "That's why we're the best team in the state. We have to show it and come out every day. And like our shirts say, we have to prove it every day."
The Trojans then added wins over Northampton and Governor Mifflin on Monday and Tuesday. Through four games, as of Tuesday, the Trojans have outscored opponents in runs, 32-4.
Already up 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Miller made put the exclamation mark on the game. With a runner on first base, Miller drove a two-out pitch over the left field wall for a two-run homerun that made it 8-0.
"I was just looking to hit it hard," Miller said. "I wanted to get the guy in and it just happened to go over."
Pinch-hitting for Justin Afflerbach, Tyler Bruno cracked a solo homerun in the sixth to make it a 9-0 advantage.
Afflerbach scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first to start the Trojans' scoring barrage. Zach Merkle's two-out double during the next at-bat brought home Hudson Rabenold.
Alex Flynn then led off the fourth with a double, and Miller follwed that up with a bunt-single down the left line. Rhett Jacoby then blasted a double to deep left field that scored Flynn and Miller and made it 4-0. Brad Vasilik's RBI double added another run on the scoreboard in the fourth.
While the bats were on from the opening inning, Moser put together a strong start. He struck out seven batters through three innings and didn't allowed a hit until the top of the fourth when Nazareth's Pat Laudenbach singled.
Even though Moser wanted to finish the game, he understands the bigger picture of what the Trojans are trying to accomplish, particularly with a heavy slate of games ahead.
"I wanted to stay in a little bit," Moser said with a smile. "It's a little early in the season to go seven."
"Rhett [Jacoby] came in key with the close. We didn't get many runners on, and it was overall well-performed by both of us."
