SCHOOL NOTES

FHS: Student musicians honored

Freedom student Kelsey Ko represented Freedom at the PMEA Northeast Region Orchestra Festival held at Easton High School on February 26, 27, and 28. Jordana Schaeffer will be representing Freedom at the PMEA Region Band Festival to be held at Big Spring High School on March 14 and 15. Only the best high school musicians in the 14 surrounding counties make it to this level and it's only one step below making the All-State festival.

FHS: Student earns Silver Key award

Kelsey Ko, FHS senior, received the Silver Key Award, Poetry Category Regional Award in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Competition 2014. The award is presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. Gerald Roscher, an English teacher, worked with her on the submission.

LHS: School nurse honored

Kathleen Halkins, LHS school nurse, has been named a recipient of the School Nurse Administrator Excellence Award, Pennsylvania North East Region, for 2014. The annual awards banquet will be held March 29 at the Penn Stater Conference Center, State College.

Marvine ES: Teacher nominated for award

John Phillips, a third grade teacher at Marvine ES, has been nominated for an Apple Teacher Award through WLEV 100.7 radio. He has a chance to win an Apple I-Pad Mini. Vote for him once everyday in March by visiting www.wlevradio.com/page.php?page_id=351.

BASD: BEA POM-POM honorees

Denise Parker and Carole Schachter were named Bethlehem Education Association's POM-POM honorees for March and April. Parker was presented with her award at the school play. Schachter was surprised at Thomas Jefferson ES close to the end of a class reading activity involving students and their senior-reading partners from Moravian Village.
