Reviewing recreation resolution to become annual practice

Keith Hantz provided an update on the township recreation resolution at the March 25 Lehigh Township supervisors meeting.

He said he has spoken to members of the Lehigh Township Athletic Association and the recreation commission regarding use of lights.

Hantz said he believes the billing cycle should run from April to July and $65 should be charged to the team.

He said the recreation commission asked if the township was attempting to stop teams from using the lights.

Supervisor Darryl Snover said the purpose is to ensure the teams playing pay the cost.

After July 15, whoever uses the lights will be responsible for the charge.

The usual need for lights is overtime games or games rescheduled because of rain.

Supervisor Sandra Hopkins said tournaments affect the light bills favorably.

Hantz proposed setting the residency requirements at zero percent and set the cost for Berlinsville at $250 and Pennsville and Danielsville at $100.

He inquired who checks place of residency.

Supervisor Cynthia Miller said she wants to be sure Lehigh Township teams will have the opportunity to play.

Snover said he prefers leaving the residency at 35 percent for a team.

Hantz said there should be a $25 nonresident fee at Berlinsville and Danielsville should have a $10 non resident fee per player.

Maintenance costs are less at Danielsville, Snover said.

The Berlinsville food stand charge should be set at $15, which may cover multiple games.

Resident Todd Schaffer of the LTAA asked if the operation must be shut down for a short period between the spring and fall seasons.

Hantz inquired about volleyball, tennis and basketball teams that use township lights.

Hopkins said the lights cost $97 last year. She said lights are sometimes left on as late as 11 p.m.

She said she was in favor of paying the cost because those sports are mostly played by township residents.

Merf Miller commented the township should receive a fair value for use of the fields.

Lehigh Township and Northampton will join to form one senior league baseball team and will move from the high school to the Berlinsville field alternately.

Since the residential percentage is still in effect, there will be no residency fees.

Supervisor Dell Grove said a considerable amount of time is spent on recreation every year. He thinks Hantz's idea of a flat $250 fee should be explored further.

The commissioners should place it on the agenda and hold a workshop with the recreation commission, Hopkins said.

The fee was waived for knee-high to play at Danielsville for four days.

The recreation board will be asked to set fees for each property for tournament use.
