David MacLaughlin

David "Kelly" MacLaughlin, 83, born July 15, 1930, in Fullerton, Whitehall, died March 26, 2014, in Westminster Village, Allentown.

He was the husband of the late Betty Jane (Maddox) MacLaughlin.

An active member of First Baptist Church, Allentown, he taught Sunday School, ushered and sang with the choir.

He was also a member of Whitehall AARP.

A 1948 graduate of Catasauqua High School, he attended Long Island University, and graduated from East Stroudsburg University with a bachelor of Science degree, and Lehigh University with a Master's degree.

He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps having served during the Korean Conflict from 1951-53.

While at Catasauqua High School, he was a three-year letterman in football, basketball and baseball.

He was first-team all-Lehigh Valley League choice in basketball in 1947 and 1948. He was also an Associated Press honorable mention all-state choice in 1947.

He was inducted into the Catasauqua High School Basketball Hall of Fame Feb. 14, 2008.

He played freshman basketball at Long Island University in 1949 and went on to East Stroudsburg State Teacher's College, where he was team captain and leading scorer in 1956 and 1957.

An all-conference selection in both seasons, he was the first All-Conference, First Team basketball player in school history in 1956 and 1957.

He was on the Associated Press All-State team and averaged 28.7 points per game over two years, scoring 546 points as a junior and 457 points as a senior. He set the school record with 53 points in a game against Trenton in 1955.

He was inducted into East Stroudsburg University's Basketball Hall of Fame Oct. 6, 2007, and the Lehigh Valley High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004.

He taught history, social studies and world cultures initially at Central Dauphin High School, Harrisburg, for one year; then at Emmaus High School.

He taught from 1957 until retirement in 1993. During his time at Emmaus High School he was a football and basketball coach.

His survivors include a son Keith and his wife, Ann MacLaughlin, of Hummelstown; daughter Diane and husband John Horoski of Schnecksville; grandson Sean and wife Katie McKenna Mac-Laughlin of Northampton, Mass.; granddaughter Sarah (MacLaughlin) Goodman and husband, John, of Hummelstown; granddaughters Stephanie and Kristin Horoski of Schnecksville; brothers Richard and his wife Eleanor of Catasauqua, and Donald and his wife Pat of Liverpool, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
