Borough is awarded $65,000 grant
Northampton Borough Council received $65,000 in good news recently.
Borough Manager Gene Zarayko at the March 20 council meeting said borough grant applications have been approved.
State Representative Julie Harhart, R-183rd, and Senator Lisa Boscola, D-18th, called Zarayko with the news.
The grant comes from Monroe County tax receipts. The county has two state approved gambling casinos within its borders.
Borough allocations will be earmarked for the development of a mini-park in the upper reaches of Main Street.
The borough earlier invested in the uptown property by acquiring a vacant commercial lot owned by Brian Kroope. Much of the purchase money was obtained by grants.
Community Planner Victor Rodite said the latest Monroe County gaming grant will be used for a gazebo for the park, site improvements and a refreshment area.
Rodite said he does not expect the project to begin until 2015. Some of the in-kind work will be performed by the borough's public works personnel.
Rodite also announced the borough will again operate a farmer's market on the grounds.
"It should open in June," Rodite said of the market.
The outdoor market is expected to be open once a week. Public response last year was a boom to the vendors and the borough. Local growers from Bath and Allen Township brought their produce to the market to sell.
There are expectations there may be more vendors at the site this year. In 2013 there were three produce stands, specialty popcorn and a food stand.
Rodite said he is looking to expand the market to include meats and baked goods.
The site is tucked in between a church on the south side and a coffee shop and the Roxy Theatre on the north end.
