Catasauqua athletes will be gathering at the high school this Sunday with a special cause in mind.
A 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held to benefit an eight-grade student at Catasauqua Middle School who recently underwent brain surgery. The event, which is sponsored by the Catasauqua High School Student Council, will begin at 10 a.m.
Cost is $5 per player and it is a double elimination with each team guaranteed two games in the blind draw. There will be two, 6-minute halves with a two-minute halftime. If there is overtime, it will be sudden-death foul shots.
There is a maximum of four players per team and three divisions: grades 5-6; 7-9 and 10-12. Prizes will be awarded for first place in each division.
Lorry Bradley, who helped organize the event with her daughter Kenzie and son Zack, stated there are approximately 30 teams already registered, and she estimated that more are expected to register over the next few days.
Bradley stated Randy Sell will run the snack stand and there will be volunteer referees form the CYA. High school students will also serve as volunteers. The registration deadline is 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning. Donations are also being accepted.
"Kenzie and her friends wanted to do something for their friend and classmate," said Bradley. "So she asked her brother Zack, who is a member of the school's student council, and Zack thought it would be a good idea for the student council to sponsor it.
"Zack has been doing what he can to get as many students as he can. This was his friends willing to do whatever they could for him. We may not be able to raise a huge amount of money, but it shows how much they care about him."
If you would like to register, text your players' names and grades to Lorry Bradley at 484-347-8107.
