Liberty gets by Zephs
No sooner did the cold weather subside than the wind picked up as Liberty's tennis team defeated Whitehall 7-0 last week.
"It's not fun playing in the wind. [The temperature] was okay today. Yesterday, we had practice, and it was horrible," said Liberty's singles player, Chris Snow.
The Hurricanes won all singles matches as Snow defeated Islam Ahmed at number one, 6-0, 6-0, Brendan Cunningham defeated Alex Rohn at number two, 6-2,6-2, and Chris Kapcsos defeated Gavin Meyers at number three, 6-4, 6-1.
Regarding his singles victory, Cunningham said, "I took shots I don't normally take. I wasn't playing tentative."
The Hurricane senior played a deliberately inconsistent match that worked in his favor.
"I started tight and a little tense because you do have some pressure that you have to win. In the first set, [Alex Rohn] was up. Then I picked it up. By the second set, I was going for a lot," said Cunningham.
Kapcsos also felt some pressure early in his match at number three singles.
"I told myself to relax, and [Coach Schnalzer] said to stay at the baseline and be patient. I relaxed a lot. I had a couple good shots down the line," Kapcsos said.
Liberty's doubles winners were Jesse Claudio and Milind Jagota at number two doubles, defeating Reno Honzo-Vasso and Max Nuscher, 6-3, 6-4, Luke Conrad and Julian Mark at number three doubles, defeating Daniel Herrera and Jordan Saliby, 6-3, 6-0, and Alex Burlew and Evan Burlew at number four doubles, defeating Hazall Achellal and Harshal Patel, 6-1, 6-1.
The Hurricanes lost at number one doubles where David Darlington and Jack Polentes fell to Toby Chan and Clement Mei, 6-3, 6-2.
As of Press deadlines, the Hurricanes are 2-2, having also defeated Dieruff, 7-0, and having lost to Emmaus, 5-2, and Pleasant Valley, 4-3.
Schnalzer said, "We were in that match against Emmaus, and one of the matches went to a third set to determine the whole match against Pleasant Valley."
Also last week, Bethlehem Catholic shut out Allen 5-0, and Freedom squeaked by Central Catholic, 4-3.
For the Patriots, Doug Leeson and Ross Sonnenblick teamed up at number one doubles to defeat Trevor Grigouk and Gabriel Velez in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
