LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Softball back with a win

The warmer climate appealed to the Whitehall softball team as the bats came out of hibernation to spark their first win of the season.

The trip to Myrtle Beach last week a produced an offensive explosion that saw them erupt for double-digit runs in a drubbing of Pascack Valley (N.J.) High School, 11-1.

Head coach Alexis Berg-Townsend said it was a close game at the outset, but once they turned their line-up over, they were able to inflict some damage on Indians starting pitcher Robyn Abaunza.

"Once we got through the line-up once, we made some adjustments and started to put runners on base," said Berg-Townsend. "That second round we just started attacking the pitcher."

They continued to attack in the later innings, tacking on eight more runs in the final two frames.

The Zephs finished with nine hits, with Kay Solderitch collecting two hits to lead the Zephs. Courtney Dragovits brought out the big lumber, knocking in three runs, while Regan Bortz and Gabrielle Molotoris each had two RBIs.

Additionally, Abigail Nguyen got a hit, while Ashlee Brosky reached base three times via the walk.

Berg-Townsend said that were able to get good at bats after making the necessary adjustments in the latter innings, something that will prove beneficial as the season progresses.

Kay Solderitch went the distance to get the win, striking out six Indians. Berg-Townsend said the lefty maintained her composure during her first varsity game, staying in command as she got the complete-game victory.

"She hit her spots, both inside and outside of the plate," said Berg-Townsend. "She really did a good job mixing it up."

The Zephs also played solid defense behind Kay Solderitch, committing just one error over seven innings.

With a young team heading north to begin play in the Lehigh Valley Conference, the combination of good pitching and good defense will allow them to stay in every game.
