Salisbury Twp man killed in crash along Route 22

A 21-year-old Salisbury Township man was killed when the vehicle he was a passenger in collided with a tractor trailer at 4:39 p.m. March 17 on Route 22, Upper Macungie Township, says Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim.

Wayne a. Leibensperger Jr., of 425 E. Paoli St., was pronounced dead 5:25 p.m. the same day by Lehigh County Deputy Coroner Richard Pender, Grim said

He said an autopsy was performed March 18 and his cause of death is attributed to multiple traumatic injuries.

Grim said he ruled the death an accident.

According to State Police Troop M Fogelsville, a 22-year-old man was driving a pickup truck east on Route 22 in the right lane when its right front struck the left rear trailer of a tractor-trailer combination parked on the right shoulder.

The driver of the tractor trailer was only identified as a 58-year-old man.

Police say it is not known why the pickup left the right side of the right lane.

Police say Leibensperger was the right front passenger in the pickup truck.

According to police, the pickup truck driver was transported by Cetronia Ambulance Corps to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township for moderate injuries.

The tractor trailer driver was also transported by Cetronia Ambulance Corps to the hospital with minor injuries, police say.

Both the pickup truck and the tractor trailer combo were disabled and removed from the scene by Hauser's Towing.

According to police, Route 22 was closed for approximately 5 1/2 hours.

The Fogelsville and Trexlertown fire departments assisted at the scene.

Police are asking anyone with information pertaining to crash to call them at 610-395-1438.
