PHS boys lacrosse looks for more in 2014
The Parkland boys lacrosse team had a memorable 2013 season. Under first-year head coach Brad Schifko, the Trojans won the Lehigh Valley Conference title, and owned a 15-6 overall record. But the team fell one game shy of playing for a district championship, losing to Central Catholic in the semifinal round.
With even higher goals and aspirations this year, Schifko wants his team to take care of its own business, and things will work out.
"We want to simply take it day-by-day, one game at a time," Schifko said. "If we can take care of our business, and do it well, the rest will inevitably take care of itself. However, we'd like to take some of the momentum from last season and continue to improve in 2014."
Parkland has a lot of returning talent in place to make another postseason run. Some of the players coming back with playing experience include Jake Billera, Mitch Carlson, Dante Cavallucci, Stephen Chenworth, Austin Close, Erik DiGirolamo, AJ DiPasquale, Blaise Fugazzotto, Alex Geisel, Zach Getchius, Jameal Hadeed, Ethan Howell, Joe Khalife, Dylan Klusaritz, Jarrett Kramer, Josh Pope, Bailey Rice, Nolan Ridgway, Taylor Ritter, Preston Saylor, Matt Smith, Joey Stevenson, Ethan Vazquez, Jon Warg, and Michael Warg.
With some key newcomers like Mitch Dobbs, Ryan Geroulo, DJ Hohman, Will Meier, Dru Miller, Gavin Saylor, and Ben Zager joining the fray, the Trojans once again have some ingredients in place.
"The team is, again, heavy with talent," said Schifko. "There are many players who are capable of making significant contributions at the varsity level."
Schifko added that the defense will be an area of strength for Parkland, and an area where the Trojans boast a lot of depth.
Consistency, discipline and patience were three areas the head coach hopes the team can improve a little on.
"If we are able to continue to place the team before individual goals, maintain our focus on the present and not get caught up in our accomplishments from a season ago, I am extremely confident that we will make another deep run in 2014," said Schifko.
Look for Parkland to be one of the league and district favorites along with Central Catholic and Emmaus.
