Following November closure, Northampton VFA reopens

Veterans can now breath a sigh of relief because the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4714, Northampton, is reopen for business.

Late last year the post home was rocked to its foundation after learning its social quarters would close Nov. 9, 2013. The closure was announced by Pennsylvania Department of Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander Russell Canevari.

The post, which includes a social quarters, bar and hall officially reopened Jan. 13.

Home Association Treasurer Albert Muick, spokesman for the new lineup of officers, said the state VFW board has replaced former officers with new personnel. Those now serving Post 4714 include John Sywensky, president; Bruce Miller, vice president; Kathy Wagner, secretary; and Muick, treasurer.

Muick did not issue a comment in January regarding the state's reasons for closing the VFW. Muick also did not stipulate if the closure was related to irregularities regarding the Northampton post's financial situation.

Muick said the VFW continued to provide a military presence at funerals, parades, appeared at nursing homes and other ceremonies during the closure.

"We are under three months stewardship by the state VFW," Muick said in January.

Muick said after the expiration of the three month oversight period, the post will again operate independently.

"Everything is going fine," Muick added. "A large number of members have come back."

The post is open daily, 10:30 a.m.-2 a.m. The facility serves food and beverages. The banquet hall is available for rental, Muick said.

"We're trying to get things back on track," Muick said.

There are between 300 and 400 social members and 150 VFW post members registered.

The home association in the past was a benefactor to the borough police department.

The post is located at Main Street and Laubach Avenue, near the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks.
