Liberty looks to improve
Liberty had their share of struggles last season in boys' lacrosse, but head coach Joe Sexton hopes that 2014 can provide better results for his team.
Coming off a 5-14 campaign a year ago, which saw the Hurricanes go 1-9 in Lehigh Valley Conference play, Sexton is optimistic things can turn around this spring.
"We have 19 seniors this year, all of whom helped start our boys club three years ago, and have increased our numbers to 35 from 26 last year," he said. "We had a few wins in our inaugural varsity year in 2013, but have higher expectations this year."
Leading the attack for the Hurricanes this year are Ryan Brong, Matt Tkacik and John Gregoris. At midfield, Tyler Seddon, Mike Morales, Evan Smith and Stowe Eighmy. They're expected to make their contributions felt.
Liberty's defense is deep, led by Andy Morgan, Juwan Foster and Jack Johnston.
Sexton has had several incoming freshman enter the program with quality skills and experience, while goalie Kevin Swain has improved from a year ago as well.
Liberty started the season on Tuesday against Bethlehem Catholic and continue play this Friday at Saucon Valley.
Seeing the team improve from last year is obviously on the agenda for Sexton, but also getting a foothold in the city against the likes of rival Freedom, is also important for the program.
With the Hurricanes entering their second year of varsity competition, only time will tell how the season plays out.
"Skills, offensive aggression and defensive strategies will be both at a higher level this year," said Sexton. "The new rule requiring changing lines on the fly will be challenging, but is new for all teams."
