FHS softball team getting work in

Freedom High School's softball team is more than looking forward to starting the 2014 season, especially without having had the opportunity to scrimmage in the preseason due to weather and ground conditions.

"The last couple days, we've been outside. We practiced in the infield a couple times. The girls have been out there in the cold, but they haven't complained at all," said second-year head coach Nora Borger.

Returning to the Patriots this season will be outfielders, Kelsey Brandl, Dana Pollock, and Megan Brown, infielder, Carly Deichmann, and catcher, Lauren Guidetti.

Brenda Reninga and Alexis Szaro will play the infield, and Zareena Ibrahim could play in the infield or outfield.

Shayla Peterson will return as pitcher for the Patriots, and will be assisted by Brandl and sophomore, Kylee Schwind.

In addition to Schwind, other newcomers include Hunter Schantz, Jana Boasan, Arielle Gonzalez, and Julianna Squerrini.

"The girls get along great. They're having fun, and they're wonderful to be around. They're just easy to coach. We only have two seniors, but we do have a lot of talent," Borger said.

Although the Patriots include girls with tournament experience, as a whole, the team is young.

"Our outfield looks very solid. Our infield is looking smooth. Hitting is good, and we have some potentially lethal bats. We're excited," said Borger.
