BC tennis wins first match

Bethlehem Catholic High School's tennis team began its 2014 season with 7-0 sweeps of East Stroudsburg South and Whitehall last week.

Nico Franekic and CJ Horn won their first career singles matches at number one and number three, respectively, against the Cavaliers.

In the Hawks match against Whitehall, Franekic defeated Islan Ahmed, 6-1, 6-0, and, at number two singles, Ryan Schmidt defeated Reno Honzo-Vasso, 6-4, 6-0.

At number three singles, Horn defeated Alex Rohn, 6-4, 6-3.

Horn said, "He was just consistent. He didn't mess up a lot. [In the second set] I kind of knew what I had to do to beat him- get up to the net and attack."

Horn, a senior, was a doubles player last year.

"I showed up this year, and [Coach Harmanos] asked if I wanted to play singles. I won, and he kept me there. [In singles], the pressure's on you," said Horn.

In doubles matches against the Zephyrs, Luke Mesko and Peter Demyan defeated Max Nuscher and Javin Meyers, 6-2, 6-1 at number two doubles, and Marcin Boraganli and Paolo Turco defeated Dan Herrera and Jordan Saliby, 6-3, 6-1 at number three.

Turco said, "My serve was inconsistent, and our entire game suffered. Once I got my serve tightened up, it made a much better game."

At number four doubles, Chris Landolfi and Mike Mintzer defeated Harshal Patel and Hazem Abdedaal, 6-3, 6-3.

Franekic and Schmidt later paired up at number one singles to defeat Ahmed and Honzo-Vasso, 6-4, 6-0.

Regarding the season ahead, Turco said, "It feels good. A lot of starters are back, and we're deep this year. We have some people not experienced at key positions, but once we build on that, we should have a pretty successful season."
