PASR honors Bath resident for service

Sally Davis of Bath and a 1999 retiree of the Allentown School District, where she taught at Dodd Elementary School, recently received the Lehigh Chapter/Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) 2013 Volunteer of the Year award.

She devoted 850 hours to volunteering.

Davis learned the benefits of volunteering from her mother, Lucy Whitehead, a retiree from the Allentown School District and a life member of PASR.

Davis runs the kitchen ministry at St. Peter's Lutheran Church on Hanover Avenue, Allentown. She works from September to mid-June and takes care of all the aspects of the kitchen, including shopping, cooking, cleaning up and volunteering.

She helps arrange for volunteers to assist with projects, run food sales to raise funds for the church and organizes pie sales eight times a year, making a minimum of 40 pies for each sale and 200 pies for Thanksgiving.

Davis is also in charge of the crab patty sales, where she helps make and sell 900 to 1400 crab patties six times a year.

Each event requires two to three days of preparation and Davis works to figure out how many ingredients are needed for each food sale and does all the purchasing.

Further, she counts the money from each food sale and does the banking for the group.

Davis has cooked for senior citizens, federal employees, Pennsylvania Dutch groups and other organizations.

She provides foods for banquets and luncheons and helps make food boxes to feed poor families during the holiday seasons.

Each box provides the ingredients to make a complete meal for a family.

As a life member of Lehigh Chapter/PASR, Davis volunteers as a member of the seating committee for the Lehigh Chapter luncheons, which occurs four times a year.

To commemorate her achievement, Davis received the PASR Volunteer of the year pin and honorary citations from state Rep. Marcia Hahn, R-138th, State Senator Pat Browne, R-16th, Congressman Charlie Dent, R-15th, and U.S. Senator Pat Toomey, R-15th.
