Last Greene off the court

Matt Greene isn't used to having free time after class. After playing four years as point guard for Misericordia, Greene's playing days are over.

The former Whitehall star saw his season end on March 1 following a 73-64 overtime defeat at DeSales in the Freedom Conference Championship.

The loss prohibited the Cougars (16-11) from gaining an automatic berth to the NCAA Division-III tournament, which has left Greene and his family with a lot more time on his hands.

"At first, we lost and then we had spring break right away," said Greene of how he dealt with the reality of his career being over. "Then I came back to school and realized how different things were going to be. I had all this free time on my hands after class. It was weird."

The weird part for the Greene family is not having anyone to watch play basketball anymore. Jim Greene Sr. has spent the past 23 years watching his sons, Jimmy, Jason and Matt, play basketball for Whitehall and throughout their respective years in college.

With that run completed now, it closes a chapter on one of the greatest basketball families in Whitehall, or more directly, the Hokendauqua area.

"What am I going to do, now I have to work more," said Greene Sr. "Maybe I'll sneak into coaching somewhere. I'll play more golf, but I'll still follow Jason [who is an assistant coach in college].

"It's been a great run and the kids have had a lot of accolades. I just feel old now that they aren't playing."

Jason Greene, who coaches at his alma mater, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, was recently inducted into the school's hall of fame and will keep the basketball blood running for the Greene family in the coaching capacity. Jimmy works with his father in the family business, but still keeps basketball close to his vest, as he just returned from the ACC tournament this week.

Matt leaves Misericordia as the school's all-time leader in assists, along with the 1,070 points he scored during his four years with the Cougars.

He hopes he can find a job in coaching once he graduates this spring.

"It's definitely one of my goals to become a coach," he said. "I think that's something I definitely want to do to stay involved in the game."

The NCAA tournament starts today and you can be sure that the Greene's will be glued to the television over the next month.

It would be weird if they weren't.
