Hockey team falls in Flyers Cup semifinal
After 32 minutes, the semifinals of the Flyers Cup at Warwick Ice Arena looked like it was anyone's for the taking. With each team scoring a goal each period, the game likely could have been won with just one more goal. But four third period goals from Central Bucks South ended any hopes, and the season, for Parkland (22-2-1) last Thursday night.
It was the second straight year the Trojans reached the final four of the Flyers Cup.
"CB South was an outstanding team, who had a good three and a half lines," said head coach Gerry Chandik. "I think they played their A-game, and played really smart."
This may have been the toughest game yet for Parkland, who never saw a lead. Tom Liberta put the Titans ahead just a little over three minutes into the contest.
Senior Brett McHale tied the game with a wrist shot that soared over the right arm of the goalie.
Once again in the second period, CB South took the lead. Brenden Clements found the back of the net unassisted. But just a minute later, the Trojans fought right back. Morgan Bensinger ripped a shot from the point that was saved, and Mike Monkiewicz had an initial rebound blocked away, but Connor Breinich slammed home the next rebound.
Parkland was playing with some injuries, which happens in a long, grueling season. But one that may have hurt the most was to starting defenseman Dan Hertia, who suffered a broken leg two weeks ago, but still gave a couple of shifts that showed how bad he wanted to win for his team.
"If we didn't have some of those injuries, I think it could've been a heck of a game," said Chandik.
The Trojans were outshot 30-13, and it was only a matter of time before the Titans started capitalizing on their opportunities.
Mike Pilla scored twice, and Alex Stoll and Damon Delaurentis each added a goal and CB South was able to shut out Parkland in the third period.
"They just kept pounding us and pounding us, and that wore us down," said Chandik. "It made us difficult to keep that pace up for the rest of the period."
Jordan Lorah made 24 saves for the Trojans, as the season ended with 22 wins, which is a school record.
